Development of Ancillary Texts

Logos

These are the logos that I have been focusing on, as there are several original logos which the band have developed over time, therefore there is a wide selection to choose from. I chose the second one as it fitted most with the existing colour scheme, therefore there will be an element of continuity, instead of having odd colours that do not contrast well together. I also edited the backgrounds of the logo to fit in with the scheme that I wanted to achieve.

I experimented with several different designs including these ones. As the colour scheme above was predominantly black and white, I varied the colouring on my text so see what it would look like. Also, I ensured that the logo stayed the same, for example, the triangle was still substituting the A, and the letters were still in capitals, as this makes it more realistic. I noticed that my photographs were in colour, therefore it would be beneficial and more effective if colour featured on the logo, as it would visually be more pleasing and would fit in with the allocated themes that I have chosen.

Therefore, I developed the text further by using the brightness, contrast and effect tools. The clothing and make up that my cast member was wearing was made up predominantly of browns and golds, therefore I decided to apply this colour scheme to the logo. Also, the model has red lipstick, therefore I decided to apply significance to the A, and make it read. This way the audience can link together the logo and the cast member taking part in the video. I also made sure there was continuity with the font, size and the text being in capital letters.

I developed it further, as I thought about the narrative in my music video, of the poor girl in the slums transforming into a rich and fun young lady. Therefore, I decided to seperate the logo into two. I then to tried to make the narrative reflect the logo. Therefore I made the left side grey and dull, in order to blend in with the photograph of her upset and distressed. I did the left side gold and sparkly, like her hair and her outfit and jewelery, I also added the tint of red within the logo to reflect her red lipstick. I was happy with this idea, as when drafting it also fitted in with the photographs I was using, therefore it looked effective.

Photographs

I used the same cast member, as I have use the same female cast member throughout the entire production of the video, therefore it was produce continuity. I chose these particular photographs, as I wanted to achieve an extremely dramatic contrast between the two different sides of the cast member. Therefore on the left, she is wearing an old coat, with dirt on her face and scruffy hair. She is also holding a sad and distressed facial expression. On the right, I dressed her up in a golden dress, with golden jewellery and a fur coat. I also applied golden make up. After watching video tutorials I was aware of how to make her hair look posh and sophisticated. I also added an element of red lipstick to connote power and beauty. Also, she is holding a happy facial expression, which is reflective of her life. I think I achieved a good contrast in terms of creating two opposite images.

These are the allocated photographs that I have chosen to use for the poster. As my aim is to merge the two photographs together to create a contrast. I would like to edit these photographs there is  half a face on each side. This way, there will be a clear contrast between the poor and homeless girl and the rich and party girl from the video. This idea will also emphasise that they are the same person. There is a colour scheme of brown, therefore it would be beneficial to edit the band logo and song title to be a brown/gold colour too, therefore this is some continuity. I also experimented with different facial expressions in order for a true reflection of the different characters to be conveyed.

Poster Location

Shopping centres
Shopping centres are always alive with activity, and if a business has a store or an office nearby, they can be ideal places to pin up promotional posters. This way, if the poster catches a customer’s eye, they can check out the business straight away.
Similarly, shopping centres are full of a range of different people, so if a business has a wide audience, a poster in this public place, on a wall or near a bench, would be highly effective.
Take advantage of the traffic
Posters can be placed in areas where there is always going to be a lot of traffic. Provided permission is granted, posters can be placed on roadsides so those in the vehicles that go past might notice. These posters must be bold and straight to the point, so the customer doesn’t have to do too much work to understand the message.
Many businesses use posters placed in areas where there is a high amount of traffic to advertise events nearby. These can be pinned up a couple of weeks before the event and left so that the motorists going past see the message more than once, reinforcing it in their minds.
Notice boards
Posters aimed at the general public receive a lot of notice if pinned to notice boards in offices, receptions or in certain venues. They are effective if they are advertising something similar to the location the poster is in. For example, music venues tend to have multiple posters advertising future events of a similar nature.
Train stations
Again, provided permission has been gained, train stations are perfect locations to advertise to the general public. People tend to do a lot of waiting in train stations, meaning they have a lot of spare time to kill. Posters are perfect for these situations because a person may read one several times before they leave the location.

My own ideas
  1. Inside Shops
  2. Bus Stops
  3. On the side of buses (depending on poster dimensions)
  4. Inside taxis or trains
  5. Inside Music shops where the target audience already are

Poster Analysis

I analysed three different music video posters in order to stimulate ideas of my own and also to find out what the main conventions where, which were to have the artist featuring on the poster, have a continuous colour scheme, make sure the text is limited and dominant, and to ensure that the poster provides some form of emotion and excitement to the audience. I also think it is importance to make sure that the audience recognizes the genre of music and the artist themselves immediately.

Second Draft of Music Video

There are lot of improvements and changes to be made, as the narrative is currently incomprehensible, therefore I need to fill in the gaps within the filming, in order for it to flow and make sense. I am going to produce a filming plan for the duration of the time off college, therefore I can be more organised and produce more sufficient and a higher standard of filming.

Photographs of the location (In the night club)

I took some photographs of the DJ booth, the bar, the lighting and the club, therefore there is a view of most aspects of the nightclub. I photographed the location before I filmed (before the venue opened), therefore there was no people, therefore I could just show a representation of the club internally and to show what type of environment it is.

Rough Initial Digipak Ideas

Template

I drafted a few ideas for my digipak, therefore I had to opportunity to experiment digitally, with images and layouts. I also changed colour schemes and used a wide range of different photographs to see whether the outcome would be effective. I followed the template and dimensions when creating the drafts, therefore it was an accurate representation.

Draft 1

The negatives of this draft are that there is too much colour and the contrast is colours makes it displeasing to look at, as there is too much variety. Therefore, if i was to produce this one, then I would ensure that the colours matched and worked well together.

I think using a wide range of photographs looks effective, when I create my digipak the model on all of the photographs will be the same person, therefore it will look more effective. I added colour to the actual CD and DVD, this makes it look exciting and vibrant. Although, I think a plainer pattern or theme on the discs, would allow them to fit in with the digipak better.

I included both genders as my cast members are both male and female, therefore they will both be recognisable in the video. I like the close up shot of the girl on the front cover, as it suggests an element of intimacy and creates a connection between the audience and the girl involved within the narrative.

I also followed conventional aspects such as including the band name, song title, list of songs on the back cover, contact information, record company logo and any other companies involved. I will also have to include aspects such as a barcode.

Draft 2

I included the official logo of the song which I am using therefore it looks more accurate and proffesional. Also, I chose to allocate the colour scheme of black and white, I think it looks like a good design, although within my music video, there are no black and white effects, therefore this would show a lack of continuity.

I put images within the faces of the CD and DVD discs, I think this looks effective as it catches people's attention. I think the second DISC design works better, as it is simpler and more conventional is terms of what is placed on a disc within the music industry.

I also included locations,  I think this is effective as it gives the audience an insight into the narrative and they are aware of what to expect. Also, I included the prop of a guitar on the back cover, to illustrate what genre of music the song was, this also indicates that the guitar features within the video.

On the front cover, I attempted to include a contrast between two different girls, to illustrate two different aspects of life. As with the other digipak draft, I  followed conventional aspects such as including the band name, song title, list of songs on the back cover, contact information, record company logo and any other companies involved. I will also have to include aspects such as a barcode.

Music Video Poster Moodboard

Poster Dimensions

These are the standard billboard poster sizes. I will have to follow the following dimensions when creating my poster. Therefore, I can be practical and find things such as bus stop posters and windows in order to advertise the song. Instead of just using posters of the same dimensions and having minimal uses. I will have to choose appropriate places where the advertisement/poster is going to get recognised and viewed the most. Or where the audience are likely to take an interest in the type of music video that is being portrayed through the poster.
